The 2026 men's FIFA World Cup kicked off in North America, immediately establishing new benchmarks for television audiences across the United States. The tournament's scheduling, predominantly featuring afternoon and evening matchups, provided a notable advantage over prior World Cups, significantly boosting viewership figures.

The opening game, featuring Mexico against South Africa on June 11, attracted an impressive 13.4 million viewers on Telemundo and Peacock for its Spanish-language broadcast, alongside 7.19 million on Fox for the English-language coverage. Both broadcasts achieved all-time records in the U.S. for a World Cup opener, with Telemundo and Peacock's Spanish-language telecast becoming the most-watched World Cup game ever in that category. This record was swiftly surpassed just a week later during Mexico's subsequent match. Throughout the tournament, NBCUniversal, owners of Telemundo and Peacock, and Fox Sports continued to break and re-establish numerous audience records. The pinnacle was reached with the final match on July 19, which drew a colossal combined audience of 62.8 million viewers (and 66.4 million for the match duration), eclipsing the previous highest viewership for a soccer telecast in the United States—26.7 million for the 2015 women's World Cup final. The prior peak for a men's match was 25.78 million for the 2022 final.

Further insights reveal the extensive reach of the 2026 World Cup: an average of 14.04 million viewers tuned into the 104 games, split between Fox platforms (7.74 million) and NBCU platforms (6.3 million). This substantial increase in games, due to the expanded 48-team format, contributed to the overall viewership. Fox Sports and Telemundo/Peacock saw viewer increases of 116% and 143% respectively compared to the 2022 World Cup. Nine of Fox's telecasts alone surpassed the previous English-language men's World Cup record of 16.78 million viewers from the 2022 final. Digital platforms also experienced immense engagement, with 77.2 billion minutes of World Cup content consumed on Telemundo's digital platforms, significantly exceeding the combined totals of the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. The final match's official YouTube broadcasts garnered an average viewership of 21 million, contributing to FIFA's YouTube channel reaching 4 billion views and 1.7 billion unique worldwide viewers for World Cup-related videos. Across all of Fox Sports' digital and social channels, World Cup content amassed 17.2 billion views, while Telemundo's social platforms saw a ninefold increase in video views, totaling 2.25 billion.

The 2026 World Cup's groundbreaking television viewership demonstrates the growing passion for soccer in the United States and the power of strategic broadcasting. This monumental success not only elevates the sport's profile but also unites diverse audiences, creating shared moments of excitement and fostering a vibrant community around the beautiful game. The record-breaking numbers are a testament to the universal appeal of competition and the collective joy found in watching athletic excellence unfold on a global stage.
