Decentralized finance (DeFi) leader 1inch has introduced its groundbreaking shared liquidity protocol, Aqua, promising to revolutionize efficiency and unlock considerable liquidity for users across diverse networks. This move is poised to transform how real-world assets (RWAs) are integrated into the DeFi ecosystem, addressing long-standing inefficiencies in liquidity utilization.

1inch's Aqua Protocol Revolutionizes RWA Trading by Bypassing Traditional Dollar Intermediaries

On a significant day for the decentralized finance sector, July 31, 2026, 1inch, a prominent DeFi protocol, publicly announced the launch of its innovative shared liquidity protocol, Aqua. This development was unveiled by Sergej Kunz, co-founder and CEO of 1inch, during an exclusive interview with TheStreet Roundtable. Kunz elaborated on how Aqua aims to bolster efficiency and free up liquidity, particularly for the burgeoning tokenized-asset market.

Kunz emphasized that the influx of real-world assets into DeFi necessitates robust infrastructure capable of providing ample liquidity. A recent study commissioned by 1inch highlighted a critical issue: approximately 80% of liquidity on decentralized exchanges, amounting to around $1.6 billion, remains unutilized at any given time. This inefficiency is particularly detrimental to nascent and less liquid markets, such as those involving tokenized RWAs.

The global landscape of tokenized equities has seen explosive growth, even as direct access remains restricted for U.S. investors. Nevertheless, users outside the United States can already trade hundreds of tokenized stocks through platforms like Robinhood, Kraken, and Ondo. Kunz illustrated Aqua's potential, stating, "You can acquire the top ten RWAs from platforms like Backed's xStocks or Robinhood and establish direct trading positions among them." He further explained the capability to create direct trading pairs, such as SpaceX for Apple stock, then SpaceX for Tesla, and subsequently Tesla for Apple, and Microsoft. This novel structure enables participants to capitalize on the trading volume generated by the movement of RWAs without converting to fiat currency. This represents a significant departure from traditional brokerage models, where assets are typically traded against dollars. Aqua facilitates direct asset-to-asset markets, creating a interconnected web where a single wallet's holdings can simultaneously back multiple trading pairs, with liquidity providers earning fees from each transaction.

The necessity for Aqua arises because, as Kunz noted, "When these RWAs are confined to isolated two-token-pair pools, such flexibility is impossible. Aqua introduces an additional layer of efficiency." While the promise of "stocks on-chain" has been widely discussed, the reality has often been complex processes for trading stocks against dollars. Kunz's vision with Aqua presents one of the first genuinely novel applications for tokenized equities: continuous, asset-to-asset markets sustained by a unified pool of reusable capital.

This innovative approach not only streamlines trading but also addresses the inherent limitations of fragmented liquidity, paving the way for a more integrated and efficient decentralized financial ecosystem.

The introduction of Aqua by 1inch marks a pivotal moment for the DeFi space, promising to unlock new possibilities for real-world asset integration and trading. This development could reshape how liquidity is managed and utilized, making the decentralized ecosystem more dynamic and efficient. For investors and participants, Aqua offers a glimpse into a future where direct asset-to-asset exchanges become the norm, reducing reliance on traditional financial intermediaries and fostering greater innovation within the blockchain sphere.

US Labor Costs Rise in Q2 Amidst Private Sector Wage Growth, but Inflationary Pressures Remain Subdued
U.S. labor expenses experienced a slight uptick in the second quarter, primarily driven by increased wages within the private sector. However, this growth isn't signaling a broader inflationary trend. The Employment Cost Index showed a 0.9% rise, consistent with the previous quarter, indicating a stable underlying labor market despite initial stronger job gains in early spring. This suggests that while wages are growing, they are not a significant contributor to overall inflation, reassuring policymakers.
